OUR MISSION
We death midwives are typically neither medically trained, nor are we funeral directors. We provide information, we advocate, we facilitate, which means that we make it easier for you to care for your own Beloved dead to whatever extent you wish, within the laws of your state. We offer tools and materials that empower families to make decisions without being intimidated by the current systems, which are unsustainable, impersonal, and expensive. Our mission is to provide holistic, non-medical, emotional, spiritual, and practical support for the dying and their families.
What is Death Midwifery?
Death midwifery, is a relatively new but rapidly growing field that focuses on providing holistic, compassionate, and personalized support to individuals and their families as they navigate the dying process. Similar to how a birth midwife assists and supports individuals during the birthing process, a death midwife offers guidance, emotional support, and practical assistance to those facing the end of life.
The role of a death midwife is multifaceted and can encompass a wide range of services tailored to meet the unique needs and wishes of the dying individual and their loved ones. These services may include providing emotional and spiritual support, facilitating communication and resolution of unresolved issues, helping with legacy work such as writing letters or recording memories, and creating a peaceful and comforting environment for the dying person.
Death midwives often work closely with hospice teams, healthcare providers, and family members to ensure that the individual's physical, emotional, and spiritual needs are being met throughout the dying process. They may also assist with practical tasks such as creating advance care directives, making funeral arrangements, and providing respite care for family members.
One of the key principles of death midwifery is the emphasis on empowering individuals to have agency and autonomy in their end-of-life decisions. Death midwives aim to create a safe and non-judgmental space where the dying person can express their wishes, fears, and hopes, and where their choices are respected and honored.
Furthermore, death midwifery seeks to destigmatize death and dying by bringing these topics out of the shadows and into open and honest conversations. By providing education and support around death and the dying process, death midwives help individuals and families approach this natural part of life with more acceptance, understanding, and peace.
In conclusion, death midwifery offers a compassionate and holistic approach to end-of-life care that honors the dignity, autonomy, and humanity of individuals as they journey through the dying process. By providing emotional, practical, and spiritual support, death midwives help to create a more peaceful and meaningful experience for both those facing the end of life and their loved ones. As awareness of the benefits of death midwifery grows, it has the potential to transform our cultural attitudes towards death and dying, paving the way for more compassionate and dignified end-of-life care for all.
